Blood on the moon

Blood Moon (lunar eclipse)
A lunar eclipse (Blood Moon)

My mother’s family were hard-line Baptists. They believed that the color red was the color of the devil. There was also a belief about a red moon, or “blood on the moon.” According to my relatives, “blood on the moon” foretold of a coming war.

There are two reasons why the moon might appear red. The grander one is a lunar eclipse. When theĀ  sun, moon, and earth are in exact alignment and the moon is in the earth’s shadow, a lunar eclipse results.

The other reason is dust in the atmosphere causing the moon to have a reddish tint.

Even with these scientific explanations, I sometimes can’t help but wonder if perhaps there’s something to some of these omens. Magic is, after all, the energies of the Universe being focused to influence nature.
