Stand Proud and Beautiful

To my gay brothers and sisters, I want to say that I don’t understand and I am sorry it is this way. Question 1, which overturns Public Law Chapter 82, of the 124th Maine Legislature, has passed in Maine. This means that the right for gay couples to marry in Maine is no longer supported. I do not understand why some people seem to feel that same sex marriage is a threat to marriage as a whole and even to heterosexuality. This is a ridiculous belief.
Please understand that not all people of heterosexual orientation feel this way. Many of us are on your side. I will continue to sign petitions, vote where I can to support your right to marry, and simply speak my piece.
I know how outraged and saddened you are, and rightfully so. I have heard the despair in some of your statements. But remember this. There was a time when persons of different races were not allowed to marry. And though there are still those that believe that people of different races should not be allowed to marry or have children, they are now in the minority. The day will come when this is true for same sex marriage too. So don’t give up. Stand proud and just continue being your beautiful selves. The time has come not to give in but to keep fighting. One day the truth will be seen by the majority.
For the heterosexuals who read this, it is time to realize, if you don’t already, that gay marriage is not a threat to marriage or to heterosexuality. A gay person should have the right to marry the person that he or she loves.
